Birthing Class and 30 weeks

Saturday Adam and I attended our birthing class. Let me tell you, this class both EXCITED and SCARED the crap out out of me! Here are a few things I learned...

  • Why do epidurals go down and not up???? Um, they actually can go UP and you have to be rushed to the OR and intubated until it wears off. In other words, it numbs your brain!!! HELLO! Scary!
  • I will be having an epidural!! FOR SURE! We watched two videos. One of natural childbirth and one with the epidural... I want DRUGS!
  • If you breast feed, they recommend you not use ANY bottles for the first 12 weeks so the baby doesn't get "nipple confusion"! WHAT??? I will be using bottles! FOR SURE!
  • Now a days, they say do not let your baby sleep in a crib with a bumper. They could smother themselves?? Couldn't they also knock themselves out on the bars?? I was confused!
  • Gaining close to 50 lbs isn't abnormal. It's not the best thing, but more women get closer to 50 than the 35 recommended. WHEW!
  • They say don't come to the hospital until your contractions are like 3-4 minutes apart. I will be there as soon as I feel the FIRST contraction. I might be waiting forever til they give me a room but I am not hanging out at home and taking the risk of dilating really fast and not being able to get an epidural!
  • I have a whole new respect for women that don't get epidurals after watching that video!
  • C-sections aren't as bad as I thought they would be, but watching the video scared to POO out of me!
  • When the head is crowning they refer to it as the "burning ring of fire!" thank you for drugs :)
  • Apparently there is a right and wrong way for a baby to suck on your nipple and if they do it wrong apparently it can be pure HELL for the mother! GREAT! I mean I can't school my baby how to do this right! What do I do so my nipples don't crack and bleed???
  • I completely understand why people don't breastfeed these days! You are supposed to breastfeed every TWO hours from the time you START! Apparently that's all you do!
  • If you poop on the delivery table, no one will see but the nurse. They put up a curtain of sorts so no one sees it! I don't have a fear of this... I am just quite sure it's gonna happen and after this weekend it's VERY common!

I could go on and on but just know that I learned LOTS that got me very excited. Made the whole thing seem more real and she will be here in 10 short weeks. Could be as few at 6 or 7.

I have a Dr appt Wednesday and we will be hearing the heartbeat! I love that! So I can't wait!

I leave you with my 30 week picture! It is kinda scary how big I am!! I am large and she is too and she lets me know that daily by kicking my ribs so much that they are sore... like someone kicked me, oh yeah they did!

As always, you crack me up!!! The birthing classes are great, but they can be scary! You are doing great to take it lightly, you will do great!!

Girl...you look AWESOME!!! :)

And, I'll be having an epidural someday...I don't blame you ONE BIT!!

as far as the breastfeeding goes each baby is different. My daughter actually ate about every hour at first during the night because she was born so little.

and as far as the nipple soreness it does happen if they latch on to just the end. Believe it or not you need to get them to open their mouth and pretty much shove your boob into their mouth pretty far to latch right so it's not so sore. when the lactation consultant helped me I was a little concerned with how not gentle she was but it's not bad and it gets easier. I actually went to a breastfeeding class beforehand and it helped but of course you don't get the hands on stuff...

Wow there is so much to learn about labor isn't there? By the time you are full term you will want to be done so bad you will be happy to be in labor! At least from what I have heard.
You look great as always.

You look great!

I didn't care for breastfeeding. I think that is all you would be doing and that's a big you....your the only one that can feed them if you don't use a bottle.

Olivia is just as healthy or more healthy than breastfeed babies. She has only been to the doctor for her regular check ups.
No ear infections or colds.

You are a RIOT!!!!! Seriously, a riot.

Get the epidural ... I begged for mine and I got them both at 2cm - didn't feel a thing with either baby and I had BIG babies!!

You look super cute too!! Adorable!

You look amazing! I can't believe you are still rocking your heels! When I was 30 weeks I had been wearing my crocs (gasp) for several weeks. My feet were so swollen I was all about comfort!

Yes, the one thing I remember my delivery nurse telling me was "honey, just imagine wrapping yourself up in a wet towel and run through that ring of fire!"

I love this post. I am a little scared to attend the child birth classes because of this! I am not too far behind you (26 1/2 weeks) and I have heard a lot about the bumper thing as well. What did they say for you to do instead of using bumpers??? I am very curious. Oh yeah - and you look great!

You are gorgeous!!!! And your poop comment cracked me up. I was terrified of that because we did see it happen to my SIL. I ate everything I could think of to help clear me out for weeks. LOL!!! Glad the classes went well also. :) XOXO

Honey you look great! I am with you on the epidural all the way! I am all for as little pain as possible! Those videos can scare you to death! As far as the bumpers some say you can use them so say do not because of SIDs. Research it online and from your friends with children! I have asked everyone I know with children including a friend who lost her son to sids (not because of the bumpers) and they all used them. So go off what advice you can get and how you feel about it. Most babies when they are that small and could be at risk can not roll like that anyway. If you use the wedge they are not going to roll into them anyway.

Oh PS the hospital will send you home if your contractions are not close enough together or dilated to a certain point. Sad I know! Most will not even let you wait in the ER. I had several friends who were all sent home and they used there birthing balls and did some exercises to get them farther ahead and went back!

Been following for a while, don't know if I have commented yet! You are looking fabulous! But the epidural going up is one SCARY fact. {Not scary enough for me not to get one though either. Ha!}

I am laughing so hard right now! Bless your sweet heart.

I had a C-section twice.. CAKE WALK!
I also had contractions for a few weeks, so please dont rush on your first one or you will be sooo sad when they send you home!
Breast feeding was super easy... I only did it for a couple months though.

Hi There!

I just started reading your blog (love it)! I am 31 weeks along with my first, and my prenatal class is in a few weeks...your comments are too funny about the video with versus without the epidural! I'm definitely opting for "with" even before I attend my class!! Best of luck with everything:)

You look so stinkin' cute! I rocked the heels when I was pg too! People couldn't believe it.
I had a c-section too and it was so easy! They were afraid Jade would be too big to come out and she would get shoulder dysplasia from possibly getting stuck so we opted for the C/S...My spinal didn't take all the way so they ended up having to put me to sleep and Michael couldn't be in there so the only thing I regret is not hearing them say "It's a girl" and hearing her first cries but I'd do it again tomm! Recovery wasn't bad either just have to move a little slower but that could happen with a regular birth depending on the tearing situation. I chose not to breastfeed b/c honestly it just wasn't for me! We are constantly on the go and I didn't want to be the only one who could feed her! My hubby and parents loved getting to feed her! They asked if I wanted the lactation consultant to come in and speak to me and I said there was no point.

First off, you look FANTASTIC! Yay for healthy baby and momma. I'm so happy for you!

Love your take on the birthing class. Lots of info, huh? After watching my bff (she's like a sister to me) give birth 2x to each of her sons, I am so on board with the epidural! Good choice!

So excited for you over the upcoming weeks!

That was very insightful! Thanks for sharing what you learned...I'm a little nervous for when it's our turn to go to class. Not sure I want to see all of that! P.S. You look great!

They don't joke around about that "don't come to the hospital unless you are 3-4 minutes apart" thing! Today is my due date and I've been having contractions as close together as 5 minutes FOR A WEEK and they keep sending us home. Oy.

Haven't read your blog in awhile, but ohmigosh you make such a cute pregnant lady!!!

Woman, you seriously crack me up! I love how they give you the worse case scenarios for labor. Well unless your the unlucky one that has a third degree laceration and poops everywhere. LOL.

And PS you look tiny for 30 weeks!

You look amazing! I can't believe it's almost time.

My sister has two little girls and she's breast fed both. The told her the two hour rule for the first one, and she listened. BIG MISTAKE. For the second one, she's learned that if the baby is hungry, the baby will wake up to eat. Don't wake a sleeping baby. As long as the baby is gaining weight, it's all good. Although if your baby is sleeping through the night (like hers is), she sometimes has to wake-up to pump.

Looking good.

Lactation told me a bottle at 2 weeks is good...and we had no problems.

And, nursing every 2 hours? Crazy..we did 3.

Stopping now..too much for you, I'm sure.

Blue-Eyed Bride said...

hahaha.... go buy some lanolin. my favorite is the medela lanolin and it helps with the dry cracked nipples. hudson had 2 bad latches that hurt, but we worked on it.

also... we started a bottle at one week and continued to breastfeed. :)

Finally doing some more catch up reading. You look so cute! It's funny how we're scared of different things - I am more terrified of drugs and a needle in my back than I am of natural birth. But we'll see on the day. The classes are interesting hey?

Kappa Prep said...

I love the bump and I agree with you 200% on the epidural!! I do not know how people can handle giving birth without one!
