Hand, Foot & Mouth WHAT?

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease... yeah it's a real "disease." Although it's more of a virus/sickness than disease. Doesn't disease sound so SERIOUS?

Well, last Thursday, ALM woke up running a fever. I didn't worry because she wasn't fussy and seemed ok. Her fever was low grade. Well, by lunch time it was up to 102.7 and I was in full blown panic. But I always tend to think she's teething (she still only has 2 teeth). Well, she ran a fever off and on all day Thursday. We gave generic Tylenol and she seemed ok. That night she woke us up no less than four or five times, which you know is rare because she usually sleeps from 9 til 7.

Friday morning I called the Dr right when they opened. We had an appointment an hour later. She wasn't running a fever when we got there thank goodness, but you could look at my sweet baby and tell she didn't feel good. While we waited on the Dr, they drew blood. The Dr comes in and says (side note: this is a Dr we don't usually see-1st timer)... "Hi my name is BLAH. Her white count looks ok. If it were high I would think something like LEUKEMIA!"

WHATTTTTTTTTT?????????? Did you really just say that word within one minute of meeting me for the 1st time????? I about went super, psycho, BRITNEY SPEARS crazy on him. I just couldn't he used that word. I was so caught off guard that I didn't hear much he said after that.

He looked her over. She SCREAMED. A LOT. And my baby just doesn't get mad much. He believed she had Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. She has ulcers in her throat. But nothing on her hands and feet. But she did have a little rash on her hiney which is a symptom of the disease. He sent us home with a large prescription of Ibuprofen and that's it. Nothing you can do for it except ride it out. She likely got it from the nursery at my gym.

She has to be quarantined for 7 days! She was supposed to be in a 4th of July Parade here on Saturday with some other babies but since she is highly contagious we couldn't be in it. We were sad! Friday night was the WORST night we have ever had with her. She was up about every hour. She didn't even do that as a newborn. But we made it through. Sleeping on an air mattress while Adam slept in the floor. Poor guy!

She is much better now. Back to eating almost normal again and playing and laughing like before. Apparently this is going around. Scary. But luckily it rarely ever gets serious. Just very uncomfortable for her. It broke my heart to see her in pain when she ate. I can't imagine!

I actually had it as a kid. I was older, like 7 or 8 but I remember how much my mouth hurt! She wasn't interested in a bottle for 3 days so we had to put her milk in a sippy cup. I was so scared she would get dehydrated but she didn't. She did however, get constipated. So Adam and my MIL did a baby suppository. I couldn't even be in the room. I can do/handle a lot of things but I just couldn't. I think for fear of her going bananas.

All is clear come Friday. We will be good to go to be back out in public :) I am excited and I know she is too! Probably will steer clear of babies and kids for another couple of days but all is well in our household.

Up tomorrow... a 4th post... Don't get too excited. We spent it on our back deck with a sick baby! But I do have cute pictures :)

Oh my goodness, how scary! I can't believe your dummy doctor would even say that word to you without there being reason to. Ridiculous! Glad to hear she's feeling better and you're able to get some rest.

Poor baby girl! I'm glad she's feeling better and hopefully you can get some rest too! I would have flipped my lid on that dr. not really but I would still be worrying about it because that's what I do as a momma! :)

Poor girl! My hubby had that as a kid too and always says how miserable it was. Can't imagine when you're a baby and don't understand. So glad she's feeling better!

I am so sorry to hear that. However you are right it is going around. A poor friend of mine just had a horrible bout of it, herself and three children (5) (3) (1) all had it at once.

Glad she's feeling better! I can't believe they said leukemia so fast! You'd think that would be the last thing they would want to think!

Oh my gosh, that stinks! I am so sorry for you, Adam, and ALM!

On another note, Emma has been feeling cruddy and not eating lately too-we are going to the doc tomorrow morning for a visit to find out what is up. But, she hasn't had a fever.

I had a friend tell me one of our practice doctors did the same thing to her once too-the doc said she thought her son had a tumor becuase he was throwing up and had a head ache...........really? What the???
